Settling into the New Year, Gently
Sandra Thorne | JAN 2
I hope you enjoyed the holiday season—I certainly did. My husband, Leigh, and I spent some lovely, quality time with both of our boys and their significant others. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we had to skip our time with extended family, which left us with a slower, more relaxed holiday than usual. Honestly, I can’t complain about that at all.
As the New Year begins, we can often feel pressure to make a fresh start or create big changes. According to Ayurveda—yoga’s sister science—the seasonal clock reminds us that winter is a time for rest, reflection, and hibernation. When we set New Year’s resolutions that don’t quite stick, it can leave us feeling deflated or discouraged. This is your gentle reminder to go with the flow. We have a whole year ahead of us to slowly and sustainably implement any intentions or goals we’ve set for ourselves.
If one of those intentions is to add a regular yoga practice into your week, I have a little New Year’s gift for you. All 5- and 10-class punch cards are 15% off until January 11, 2026. Simply use the code HAPPY2026 at checkout to receive the discount.
On January 10, we’re welcoming Billie from Raven Magik back to the studio. This time, she’ll be introducing us to Human Design—a system that weaves together Astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, the Chakra system, and modern energetics to map your personal energetic blueprint. This beginner-friendly workshop will explore the foundations in a grounded, accessible, and meaningful way.

As we move through January and February, we may experience unpredictable winter weather, including heavy snow and extreme cold. For this reason, I have a cold weather policy in place. If temperatures drop below -35°C, or if conditions are unsafe due to heavy snow, class will be cancelled. Many students and teachers travel from Lacombe, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, and Trochu, and safety is always the priority. I’ll provide as much notice as possible—most often by email. Please also remember: if you don’t feel comfortable traveling, please don’t risk it. No yoga class is ever worth endangering yourself for. If you decide not to attend, please let me know by email, or message on Facebook, or Instagram.
Lastly, the three women participating in the Yoga Teacher Training are now about halfway through the program. I absolutely love their curiosity and the thoughtful conversations we share. One of those conversations inspired a new addition to the studio—a jar called Notes from the Heart, located at the front entrance. Feel free to take a love note before or after practice. There’s also extra paper if you feel called to add a quote or a message of your own.
Thank you for being part of this beautiful community. I’m so grateful to share this space and practice with you.
With warmth,
Sandra 💚
